Update CB placed FIRST in the Television News category, this June at the Hearst National Championship in San Francisco.
Cierra Brooke or better known as “CB”, is the Jacksonville Bureau Chief for Eastern North Carolina’s NBC Affiliate, WITN. She is excited to return to her hometown to tell the exciting stories of the people in the area.
During her undergraduate years, CB was heavily involved with the award-winning student newscast, Carolina Week. She filled the roles of Anchor and Multimedia Journalist in the Fall of her senior year. In the Spring of her senior year, she returned as an MMJ and an Investigative Reporter for the show. CB is a one-woman band: shooting, writing and editing all of her own stories. The equipment is heavy and the days can be long but CB says “the final product and her love of sharing stories makes it all worth it.”
Most recently, CB placed first out of 68 entrants from 37 schools in the National Hearst Television News Competition. Most recently, CB was selected to compete at the Hearst National Championship at the end of this month (May, 2016). CB also completed the CBC-UNC Diversity Fellowship with WRAL in March of 2016. She was selected out of applicants across the country to work as a reporter for a week with a WRAL photographer. Her piece on the North Carolina teaching shortage can be found on www.wral.com, search: CB Cotton. During her final semester at UNC, CB also was an intern with ABC11/WTVD’s Investigative Team.
She held several active and leadership roles on campus; in addition to fulfilling the role as MMJ for Carolina Week – UNC’s award-winning student newscast – she is also a member of Interactive Theatre Carolina and a J-School Ambassador. In December of 2015, CB was offered a mentorship with Senior Investigative reporter, Stephen Stock and the Investigative Unit at NBC Bay Area. She spent time shadowing the reporters, producers and editors at the Unit and describes it as, “solidfication of her passion about television news.”
CB enjoys investigative, cold-case and multicultural reporting. She aspires to be a Dateline correspondent or a network level investigative reporter.
